Culpeper County School Dist is Hiring a Summer Maintenance Worker Near Culpeper, VA

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK

 Under general supervision, to perform varied grounds maintenance work on school grounds; and to perform related work as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS

Includes the following plus other duties may be assigned.

  • Irrigates and cultivates trees, shrubs, turf and ground cover.
  • Mows, edges, waters, trims and fertilizes all grass areas and keeps grounds in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Sprays and prunes trees.
  • Drives district trucks and other vehicles.
  • Assists in the installation, maintenance and repair of sprinkler systems.
  • Maintains tools and equipment in proper condition.
  • Operates equipment, including power lawn mowers, zero turn mowers, weed eaters, sprayers, tractors, rototillers, air compressors, cement and carpentry tools.
  • Performs ground maintenance duties including patching asphalt, pouring cement, laying sprinkler pipe, repairing fences and playground equipment.
  • Prepares and maintains athletic fields.
  • When not engaged in grounds maintenance or gardening duties, may assist as required in a variety of maintenance work throughout the district involving heavy manual labor and semiskilled tasks.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Basic methods, materials, tools and equipment used in grounds maintenance and gardening work.
  • General safety procedures related to grounds maintenance.

Ability to:

  • Maintain work schedules in performing tasks.
  • Perform heavy physical labor.
  • Work without immediate supervision.
  • Operate a variety of grounds equipment.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate openly and effectively with students, parents, community patrons, staff and administration as a positive representative of Culpeper County School system.
  • Maintain good working relationships with all employees and the public.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Currently enrolled in High School or College programs
  • Familiar with grounds equipment

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Positions assigned to this class require the possession of a valid Virginia Driver’s License.
  • Good physical condition, work in mostly exterior in the elements

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
